The Cost Formula

Every route estimate on PlainMove follows the same formula: (hourly_rate x crew_size x total_hours) + (distance x per_mile_rate) + materials_cost. This approach models the three core components of any professional move: labor, transportation, and materials.

Labor Rates

Labor rates are derived from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OES) program, specifically SOC code 53-7062 (Laborers and Freight, Stock, and Material Movers). The national median hourly wage is $17.88 as of the 2023 release. PlainMove applies regional adjustments based on BLS geographic wage differentials: Northeast +15%, West +20%, South -10%, Midwest -5%. Both origin and destination city adjustments are factored into the estimate.

Crew Sizes and Loading Hours

Crew sizes and labor hours are assigned by home size. Studios and one-bedroom apartments use a 2-person crew with 2-3 combined load-and-unload hours. Two- and three-bedroom homes use a 3-person crew with 5-7 combined hours. Four-bedroom and larger homes use a 4-person crew with 9+ combined hours. Those home-size hours are a single labor band in the published calculator (matching the route ETL), not a separate unloading add-on. They reflect typical professional move durations for standard residential conditions.

Distance Calculation

Distances between cities are calculated using the haversine formula, the great-circle distance between geographic coordinates. A per-mile rate of $0.50 is applied to account for fuel, vehicle wear, and transit time. Driving time is estimated at 50 mph average, which accounts for highway driving, urban navigation, stops, and crew rest breaks for long distances.

What Is Not Included

PlainMove estimates represent base professional moving costs. They do not include packing services, specialty item handling (pianos, pool tables, hot tubs), storage, access surcharges (long carries, stairs), full-value insurance, or tips. These additional services typically add 20-40 percent to the base cost for a full-service move.

Accuracy and Calibration

Our estimates are designed to approximate mid-market professional moving costs. They will be lower than full-service quotes that include packing and specialty items, and higher than DIY or labor-only options. Seasonal factors (peak summer pricing can add 25-50 percent) are not reflected. Use PlainMove estimates as a baseline for evaluating quotes from movers, not as a guaranteed price.
